Grand Prix of South Africa Compak Sporting 2019.

This weekend was an absolutely fabulous way to end off the shooting year - and what a year it has been for Compak SA, with South Africa bringing back two Grand Prix trophies from the 2019 World Cup - Compak Sporting - GalgamΓ‘csa, Hungary.

Shooters have travelled around the country and were not disappointed with the ranges set up at clubs that would test their skills and improve there shooting. The year started with Wattlespring Gun Club and after that shooters could visit the Natal and Cape coastal clubs, the Free State, the beautiful Outeniqua - just to name a few. Every month there was a shoot to look forward to.

With a little bit of sadness we look at this last weekend.

The rain on Friday night brought relief.

The Bokke brought home the World Rugby Cup on Saturday.

The Sterkfontein Shooting Academy Gave us our last shoot of the year.

This was a good weekend for all.

With a full entry, we once again congratulate Tim Hubner with a magnificent win 196/200. Very proud of our South African Champion. Deon Steyn 187/200 and Joel Allem 185/200. Well done gents.

We never forget the shooters that make the shoot interesting so please enjoy our video of the weekend. Without you there would be no shoot. Thank you for supporting Compak SA.

Hope you have had a very successful 2019. Make 2020 even better. Keep up with practice - or have a break and enjoy the holidays, but don't forget 25 & 26 January 2020 at Wattlespring Gun Club, that's where it all starts again.

Centurion Compak Trial 2019

South African rugby team played against the all Blacks on Saturday

AND

Staunch South African rugby supporters we all are.

Everything is OKAY
When the Compak Shooters were asked to pitch up an hour earlier so that we could watch the Bokke play the All Blacks there was no hesitation and at 0800 on a glorious summer morning the shooters were on their stands.

Centurion Club as always went out of their way to put on a superb shoot.

Should I Eat This!!!
Teals, Rabbits and loopers you name it, we had it all lined up - 200 clays on eight ranges over two days.

What more do you want as a shooter.

Congratulations to Deon Steyn - High Gun with a grand total of
Handing Out Medals & Making The Speeches
191. Runners up were Brent Smith and Matthew Greef  - boasting with seven 25 straights between them. You can see the results HERE

I Am Not Sure What They Were Discussing.
On Sunday afternoon when all was done and the prizes awarded (and by the way there were some lovely goody bags for the prize winners), new friends were made and old friends caught up on shooting stories since they last saw each other around a beer or two.

All shooters will be putting in some serious practice as we next will meet in Bloemfontein at the Maccauw Clay Target Club on the 19th-20th October for the SA Presidents Cup & and Compak SA Championship 2019. This is an important date and something really good to look forward to. I will have more news about this event soon.

Limpopo Open Shotgun - Al Thandiwe Safaris

Last weekend we traveled to Mokopane where Richard shot the Limpopo Open.
It is always lovely to get back to the bush-veld.

The entire Limpopo Province is really in need of rain. The bush has a grey tinge to it, it is so dry.

Al Thandiwe is lovely to shoot at and all the ranges that were used had lovely back drops.

Once again the wind pumped and everyone battled but for some reason Richard was zoned in and shot his best scores since we had the farm attack and it looks like all his hard work is finally paying off.

Saturday he shot a 90 and on Sunday he added 94 to his score. He had two straight 25's which was lovely to watch. It was like old times sitting and watching him shoot these scores.

Well done Richard - I loved watching you shoot.

27 September 2016

Safari Outdoor @ Wattlespring Shooting Club

The monthly Safari Outdoor Clay Target competition took place at
Wattlespring Gun Club and 95 guns took part.

Beautiful weather and in our detail some new faces we did not know. That's what is so lovely about this sport. We started off quiet and reserved and after the third stage there were cheers, encouraging remarks and loads of laughs.

I finished with a massive bruise to my face - didn't feel it at any stage - but very pleased with what I had accomplished as far as shooting both eyes open. Please remember I am a new clay shooter. Richard had a good laugh when he realized what I was doing and correcting this made a big difference in my score.

Richard of course always does well.

Loved it.

Central Gauteng Leaugue -- Mpumalanga League

So this is one of those two in one posts again.
I have no idea where time goes.
This week was the unpacking of Northern Lights new shotguns that arrived from Italy so it was checking serial numbers and seeing that everything was entered for inspection on Thursday.
We had some very satisfied customers who ordered their left handed shotguns that fir perfectly.
I really did have a very valid reason for not posting Central Gauteng League earlier.
So - Central League on 3 October was a lovely day with good friends. I started off like I hadn't shot for ages but slowly it fell into place. Only snag was there was a bottleneck at stage 7 and 8 so we sat for about an hour and a half.
10 October and we decided to take a drive out to Trichard.
We followed our GPS and landed up in a mielie field but after a phone call to the club they soon put
us on the right track.
Never been there and what a blast we had.
Everyone was so welcoming and making us feel at home.
Six stages that you could test your speed a bit.
Thanks Teks Shooting Club - we really enjoyed.

Central Gauteng Rifle League & Northern Gauteng Handgun League & Safari and Outdoor Clay Competition at Wattlespring Gun Club

Once this shooting business gets into your blood it is very addictive.
You think about it, you talk about it, you plan around it, you dream about it.
No matter how or why - shoot you must.
Colin, Johan, Gerald, Jose, Daan, Terrence, Tyrel, Remi
Daan Our RO Making Sure
Richard went off to his first ever Rifle league on
Saturday with a brand new gun and no idea of what to expect. I only saw him later in the day as I had a family commitment - all ladies - out in the country - which I really enjoyed, Thanks family.
That's How Much Gerald Enjoyed It
Back to Richard and his first rifle shoot. He was like a child with his first toy ever. He couldn't stop talking about it. The detail he shot in helped all the newbies through their paces and now he can't wait for the next rifle shoot. I think he was too busy enjoying so sorry, no photos.
Colin In Action
Not often do we go our separate ways but this Sunday Richard
went off to the Safari & Outdoor Clay Shoot at Wattlespring where he is showing Aike the ropes with his new Redolfi Shotgun that he bought and I spent the day at Magnum United Shooting Club for the Northern Gauteng Handgun League.
I battled a bit to find the club but got there in time to gear up and find a detail.
As always there is camaraderie from everyone you meet at a shoot. I had never shot with these guys before and we had an absolutely fabulous time.
Thanks all.

Redolfi EOS Sport Review by Mark Stone

Redolfi EOS Sport

Mark Stone takes a look at a new name on the market, the Redolfi EOS Sport, a 12g with Italian artisan heritage…
Part and parcel of Italian gunmaking, whilst certain of the established names have gone on to build global empires, numerous small artisan makers have enjoyed almost anonymous success.
Manufacturing shotguns that have a ready and waiting band of loyal customers, their ability to sell all they make combined with smaller production numbers means there are makers in existence that even today nobody outside of Italy has actually heard of. Well here’s one that you will soon hear a lot about, the name of Arturo Redolfi and the company he founded in 1922 is more than likely to make itself known to a growing number of UK shooters.
Imported into the country by Malmo Guns near Lancaster, the association came about purely by chance. Already the importer of Cheddite cartridges, it was an impromptu visit to an Italian trade fair that saw Bryan Prest and the Redolfi family do the deal, Malmo’s racks now resplendent with more or less the entire Redolfi range. Similarly, given the price of these shotguns it comes as no surprise than the staff at Malmo are having difficulties keeping the shelves stocked, numerous shooters adding a Redolfi game or clay gun to their ticket.
Main reason for this is that certain Italian makers have wised up to the fact that the reason most shooters opt for a Turkish-built shotgun is because of the price. However, given the option, these potential owners of Turkish weaponry would more than likely prefer to buy Italian if the price was right. Well here’s a head’s up, if there’s one thing I can say from the off about Redolfi, the prices are most definitely right, and right by a good chunk of change.

Excellent choice

The 12g on test is the EOS Sport over-under which, as the name suggests, is Redolfi’s all-round clay breaker. Arriving in its own travelling case complete with a full set of extended choke tubes, the first aspect of the EOS Sport you notice is the quality and fit of the straight grained, lacquer finished walnut. Of a standard you’d expect to find on more expensive shotguns, the full-sized sporter style stock, complete with soft rubber recoil pad, the curvature and checkering on the grip along with the nicely contoured palm swell are well proportioned and properly presented.
Likewise, the Anson-latch forend, the checkering of the same well-defined quality as that of the grip, the rounded London-style adding visual elegance and modernity to the EOS’s looks. Similarly, the profile of this, my preferred forend style offers a secure hold for the leading hand whilst allowing the shooter to adjust their grip and therefore gun direction and attitude dependant on target.

Tried and tested

When it comes to the metalwork, Redolfi has based the EOS around the tried and tested Italian design. Measuring 30 11/16 inches or 30 inches without the extended chokes fitted, the gloss black barrels, complete with vented mid-rib and a tapering 5-9mm vented top rib swage into three inch chambers. These in turn locate into a steel, mechanical boxlock action, the style of which is renowned for its strength and reliability. Externally, detailed scroll work decorates the base of the action, forend irons and broad trigger guard whilst inlaid gold flying clays form the bulk of the ornamentation, deep moustaches curving from the fences and along the underneath of the chambers. Now whilst gold clays aren’t to everyone’s taste, mine included, by the time you take a look at the price ticket, you tend to overlook the ornamentation.

Straight out the box

Before shooting this Redolfi, it’s well worth looking at the physical aspects of the gun. Weighing in at quite a substantial 8lbs 9oz with an overall choke inclusive length of 47¾ inches, drops at comb and heel are a precise 17/16 inches and 23/8 inches with a length of pull measuring 1411/16 inches. One area that could possible benefit from a little attention is the trigger; whilst it’s crisp and predictable the average breaking weight of 7lbs is a tad heavy by most clay gun standards. It will lighten up with some minor attention but it’s something I’d prefer to see the factory resolve, since the attention to the gun’s detailing is excellent.
Unsurprisingly Malmo requested that I test the EOS Sport using 28g Cheddite Trap Oro shells filled with 8½ shot. A good all-rounder, or so I was informed. I choked the gun with Cyl and Improved Cylinder. The first sensation is that whilst the EOS errs towards slightly heavy for a sporter, with a balance point about one inch in front of the hinges, sensible stock dimensions and as the Arrow Laser Shot confirmed, a good flat pointable attitude, the gun was an almost perfect fit.
Feeling in the hands like a trap gun, the mount and sight picture adding to the sensation, by the finish of the third stand of Bond & Bywater’s evening shoot, I was but two birds away, the lost targets definitely my own fault, the final score one that I’d expect from a gun I’m used to shooting. The gun mounts easily, the stock an excellent fit whether shooting gun mounted or gun down, whilst the weight ensures that even when using top-end Italian loads, the perceived recoil isn’t actually worth mentioning. In turn this highlights that, whilst from the shooter’s point of view the gun is the right size, it also confirms that Redolfi have got their angles and drops bang on.
The benefit of a sporter that weighs and feels like the EOS Sport is that it slows you down. Its not that the gun is heavy to shoot with, it’s that it actively discourages the shooter from snatching at their targets. Movement is more measured; the thought process more relaxed whilst to ensure you’re setup correctly for opposing clays, the EOS makes you stand correctly to make certain you’re upper body is suitably balanced for the variation of balance and deviation of swing. Don’t believe me? Go try a 12g that doesn’t fit you then give an EOS Sport a try, the difference is instantaneous.
Now for the good bit – Redolfi’s EOS Sport, as tested, will set you back £795. No, you haven’t misread anything, a genuine, all-out, full-blown Italian competition 12g for less than £800… just! And if the mood so takes you, add £100 and you can have the same EOS Sport but this time with an adjustable comb stock, once again all in for less than a grand.

Conclusion

With the Redolfi EOS Sport, it’s a gun that you will grow with and learn how to use and apply the gun’s abilities. But to shoot with a budget 12g as well as I did from the very first stand says something about how well sorted this Redolfi is. If further proof were needed, one of my squad members had just posted a seriously good score at the recent Classic, an event that attracts the cream of sporting shooters. I walked back to my car six points clear of one of the UK’s top shooters, so giving Malmo Guns a quick bell could well be a good ideaIf Malmo’s sales of the EOS Sport are any method of gauging the gun’s popularity, it could well be a case of get your order in bright and early. After you’ve shot with one you’ll understand as to why. Most competition 12 bore of around this price or of this generic grade are in most instances passable, will perform adequately, generate a decent score providing the shooter is prepared to put the work in and provide an ideal grounding before moving onto a better shotgun.

Nationals at Komatiepoort and July News

Braai  At Figtree B&B
The 8th July we packed up and were off to Komatiepoort for the second leg of the Nationals.
I never knew Komatiepoort was so far other side of Nelspruit. It feels like a forgotten part of the country. Beautiful in between the mountains on the way but dusty and windy that weekend.
On The Way
Guns, mags and ammo had to be cleaned constantly.
We stayed at Figtree B &B on Marloth Park Reserve. I always thought it was quite a larny place from what we were led to believe but I would not like to live here. Security was a big no no and the residents are quite indifferent to the subject when brought up.
Our Squad 15
There was an incident of an RO's gun being stolen but they still turned a blind eye to their own risks.
Wattlespring Gun Club has new management and so this month saw a new Club Competition day sponsored by Liquor City which we attended on 16th July. Only about 15 - 20 shooters but with some advertising should grow.
Safari and Outdoor has now taken over the Maglite shoot and on Sunday the were 105 guns taking part.

Our Time Back Home After The UK

Central Gauteng League
Orazio - AKA The Godfather
Now I am playing catch up again with news since we returned from our holiday in the UK and
Europe.

After returning on the Thursday we could be found at Golden City Club Shoot on the Saturday 17th June. I was so slow I think my muscle memory had checked out on me and I had to think of every movement.

Relaxing At Pretoria Botanical Gardens
We then had Orazio's daughters wedding on the 24th June which was such an elegant affair to attend. A really special chapel ceremony and then a very elegant reception all on the grounds of Memoire Wedding Venue. Lovely food, good company and excellent wines.

Our Newly Christened Ryan
So the weekend did not stop there. On Sunday morning it was off to Pretoria for Ryan's Christening and seeing that Warren and them are building and in a bit of a mess, we did a family day at the Pretoria Botanical Gardens after the church service. That was lovely for the kids ro run around and enjoy a bit of the winter sun.

First weekend in July was the Central Gauteng League at Golden City so guess what we were doing? I'll leave that to you.

Pretoria Steel Challenge

Some Basics
Spring has sprung and after a few late chilly days our beautiful African sun once again beats down on us.
How fortunate we are that we can enjoy a weekend like this.
We firstly attended church at Northfield with Trevor blessing us with a sermon straight for the heart.
Then we combined our two most favourite past times.
We decided to pack out Harleys and off we were to Pretoria to shoot the Steel Challenge. Richard being the real gentleman as always carried all the ammo and gear. I saw to it that I has my lipstick and hair brush and I did make sure that I packed the cold drinks and chocolates in my bag.
Not Long And Your Hooked
No matter if you are a newbie or you think you can shoot or you are a pro, you have a
wonderful time at the Steel Challenge.
They are always professional and always try to tweak your shooting abilities.
I loved the ride and we will definately do this more often now that summer is here and of course I loved the shoot.
Thanks Gys and the Gang - superb as always
